How to Set Up and Manage Lead Sources

Sources are the lead providers or connected to your Opta account. This article covers how to add, manage, and connect them to your campaigns.

Adding a Source

  1. Click Sources in the side navigation.

  2. Click + New source in the top-right corner.

  3. Enter the source name.

  4. Save.

The source is now in your account but needs to be linked to a campaign before it can receive leads.

Activating and Deactivating Sources

Each source has an Active toggle. Sources must be active to receive leads. Turn the toggle off to pause a source without removing it. You can reactivate it at any time.

Use the Active and Inactive tabs at the top of the Sources page to filter your list.

Editing a Source

  1. Click the three-dot menu next to the source.

  2. Click Edit.

  3. Update the source name or status.

  4. Save your changes.

Linking Sources to Campaigns

A source must be linked to at least one campaign before it can receive leads or have posting instructions.

There are two ways to link sources to campaigns:

From the Sources page (bulk)

  1. Select one or more sources using the checkboxes.

  2. Use the bulk action to link them to a campaign.

From the Campaign editor

  1. Open the campaign you want to add sources to.

  2. Go to the Sources tab.

  3. Add the sources you want to link.

Each campaign generates its own posting instructions per source. If a source is linked to multiple campaigns, it will have separate posting instructions for each.

Posting Instructions

Once a source is linked to a campaign, posting instructions are automatically generated. These include the source's endpoint, credentials, required fields, and campaign requirements. Send the posting instructions URL to your source so they can integrate.

Posting instructions support two methods:

  • JSON API is the default and preferred method. Instructions are available as soon as the source is linked to a campaign.

  • Webhook is an alternative for sources that can't send structured posts or are connecting a form. The webhook must be created manually since it is not generated by default. (A detailed guide on setting up webhooks is coming soon.)

For more on what your source sees when they receive posting instructions, see the Lead Source Integration Guide.

Setting Budgets

You can set optional budgets for each source per campaign. Budget caps can be daily, weekly, monthly, or total. Once a source hits its cap, leads from that source are automatically rejected until the next period.

To set a budget:

  1. Open the campaign.

  2. Go to the Sources tab.

  3. Set the budget for the source.

Rules and Filtering

Rules are configured at the campaign level, not the source level. All sources linked to a campaign share the same validation, duplicate detection, targeting, and filtering rules.

If a source needs different rules than your current campaign settings, create a separate campaign with the rules you need and link the source there. (See What is Opta and How Does It Work? for an overview of campaign-level rules.)

Blocking Sub IDs

If you identify underperforming traffic from a specific sub-source (Sub ID), you can block it without removing the entire source.

  1. Open the campaign.

  2. Go to the Sources tab.

  3. Find the source and manage its blocked Sub IDs.

Leads from blocked Sub IDs will be rejected automatically.

Archiving a Source

To remove a source from your account:

  1. Click the three-dot menu next to the source.

  2. Click Archive.

Archiving removes the source from your active list. Use this for sources you no longer work with.

Searching for Sources

Use the Search bar at the top of the Sources page to find a source by name.
